LEAWOOD, KS (March 15, 2005) - The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and McNeil Nutritionals, LLC, makers of SPLENDA® Brand Retail Products, have partnered to support an AAFP fitness initiative, Americans in Motion (AIM). Americans in Motion is a 10-year effort designed to improve the physical activity, nutrition and emotional well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Support for the AIM initiative is made possible in part by an educational grant from McNeil Nutritionals. The grant will provide for the development and distribution of a tool kit that will help family physicians improve the nutrition and fitness of their patients. The kit will be available to family physicians in spring 2005 and its components include valuable resources to help health care professionals interact with patients in an office or community/school setting. Take-home materials to help patients incorporate healthy eating and exercise into their lifestyle are also included. Kit materials include:
  • a Body Mass Index (BMI) wheel,
  • an office waiting room poster that encourage patients to ask their family physician about improving health and fitness,
  • "1-2-3 Sensible Steps to Help You Manage Your Weight", a patient education piece that includes tips on healthy eating and active living,
  • a food and activity tracker for patients to track their daily food intake and physical activities,
  • health guides with advice to help patients stay motivated on their weight management plan, and
  • fitness prescription pads for doctors to prescribe fitness-related activities to their patients.
A downloadable version of the tool kit will be available at www.aafp.org.

"We are very pleased that McNeil Nutritionals has joined with America's family physicians to improve the health of our patients. More than 210 million office visits are made to family physicians every year. We see more patients - from infants to the elderly - than any other specialty, and AIM is a great opportunity to help stem the tide of health problems associated with a lack of fitness such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, depression and many others," said Michael O. Fleming, M.D., Board Chair of the AAFP.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to support this important nutrition and fitness initiative that reaches out to both family physicians and their patients," said J. Roberto Moran, M.D., Director of Medical & Nutrition Affairs for McNeil Nutritionals. "We look forward to continuing our partnership with the AAFP on their long-term AIM campaign, which we believe will improve the health of all Americans.

About Americans in Motion (AIM)
Americans in Motion was created in response to the epidemic of obesity in the United States. The first step of the initiative, launched in September 2003, focused on improving the health of family physicians themselves. It encouraged family physicians to "walk the talk" about fitness, and lead healthier lives by incorporating physical activity and proper nutrition into their daily routine. Step two, launched in October 2004, challenged family physicians' office staff to become more fit and participate in the "Healthiest Family Medicine Office in America" program. The third and final step, currently in development, will focus on patients and communities. In this final step, family physicians are able to act as role models for their patients and include their own personal experiences when counseling patients on fitness.

AIM is supported by educational grants from the following core supporters: Campbell's Center for Nutrition and Wellness, McNeil Nutritionals, LLC, and the National Dairy Council. Educational partners include America on the Move, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and the International Council on Active Aging.

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 100,300 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.

Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 228 million office visits each year — nearly 84 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
