Dr. Kivlahan splits her time as a practicing family physician at Fantus Health Center at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Chicago, Ill., and as Medical Director of Special Projects at Schaller Anderson Inc., a Medicaid Health Plan Management Company in Phoenix, Ariz. As the former medical director of the Fantus Health Center at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Dr. Kivlahan improved existing care systems and developed new programs to educate the urban poor about hypertension and diabetes. The Health Center serves the most economically deprived and medically underserved communities in Chicago and sees more than 350,000 patients a year.
As head of the Missouri State Health Department, Dr. Kivlahan changed reimbursement policies to enhance maternal and child health care and improved immunization rates for children.
Learning about health care disparities in rural Missouri and inner city Chicago, Dr. Kivlahan also served on a foundation board that provides hundreds of thousands of dollars towards reducing these disparities.
"I am honored to be a recipient of this award and believe that all physicians have a duty to bring the art and science of medicine to every patient," said Dr. Kivlahan.
The Pride in the Profession award recipients attended an awards banquet on March 13, 2005, where they received a grant of $1,000.

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 110,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.
Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 240 million office visits each year — nearly 87 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
