“This site is intended to be a single source for reliable, balanced information on a variety of health topics – a trusted source that family physicians can feel good about recommending to their patients,” said Leigh McKinney, AAFP’s director of online and custom publishing. “This award highlights the AAFP’s commitment to improving the health of the public.”
Familydoctor.org provides objective content that is written and reviewed by physicians and AAFP patient education professionals with the inclusion of Spanish translations for much of the material. Tools for patients include a dictionary of common medical terms, a feature that allows users to locate family physicians nationwide, a BMI calculator and a calorie calculator for joggers. Users can search by symptom and link to a flowchart to answer a series of yes-or-no questions to narrow down a medical condition.
The AAFP constantly updates the site, including a timely section that provides information on the new Medicare prescription drug plan http://familydoctor.org/848.xml. Other content includes:
- Conditions A to Z http://familydoctor.org/common.xml provides information on everything from allergies to yeast infections, including how they’re diagnosed and treated.
- Tips for Talking to Your Doctor http://familydoctor.org/837.xml guides patients to links to help them choose a physician, create a health journal, prevent medical errors, manage health and find reliable health information online.
- Parents and Kids http://familydoctor.org/children.xml guides parents, teens and kids to links that discuss ADHD, eating disorders and everyday illnesses and injuries among other topics.
- Women http://familydoctor.org/women.xml provides information for women on a variety of topics that include heart disease, contraceptive options, gestational diabetes and postpartum depression.
- Men http://familydoctor.org/men.xml guides men to links that discuss prostate cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, how to deal with stress and hair loss, among other topics.
- Seniors http://familydoctor.org/seniors.xml provides information for older adults on topics that include blood pressure medications, preventing medical errors, glaucoma and hospice care.

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 100,300 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.
Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 228 million office visits each year — nearly 84 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
