San Antonio Physician Re-Elected Vice Speaker of the American Academy of Family Physicians

WASHINGTON – Leah Raye Mabry, M.D., R.Ph., a family physician in San Antonio, Texas, was re-elected vice speaker of the Congress of Delegates, the governing body of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), at the organization’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. As vice speaker, Mabry will continue to serve as an officer on the AAFP’s board of directors. The AAFP represents more than 94,000 physicians and medical students nationwide.

Mabry is associate director of the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Practice Residency Program, San Antonio and is clinical professor with the University Health Science Center, Department of Family Practice, San Antonio.

A member of the AAFP since 1985, Mabry has served on the commissions on finance, public health, and clinical policies and research. Currently, she serves on the AAFP’s Task Force on Health Care Coverage for All, promoting universal health insurance. She also represents the AAFP with the Nutrition Screening Initiative as a member of the Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee on Nutrition Care Alerts: Red Flags and Action Steps for Care Givers, and the United States Pharmacopia as a member consultant. Over the past decade she also has served as AAFP’s representative to the American Coalition for Traffic Safety Blue Ribbon Panel II: Protecting Our Older Child Passengers, the National Coalition on Judicious Use of Antibiotics and the National Vaccine Advisory Committee Working Group. Previously she served on the AAFP’s Strike Force on Liability Reform.

Mabry is a member of the board of directors of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) and has previously served as president, vice president and treasurer. She chaired the TAFP Research Network Organizational Committee and was on the board of directors of TAFP R-Net, the office-based research network she helped develop. She chaired the TAFP Task Force on Governance and has served on numerous other committees, including legislative and public policy, resident affairs and rural health.

Mabry earned her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy at The University of Texas, Austin, and her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. She served her internship and residency at the Medical Center Hospital, San Antonio, and later completed her fellowship in teaching at the Faculty Development Center in Waco, Tex. She is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is an AAFP fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.

Mabry is a member of and has served on numerous committees of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, National Association of Parliamentarians, Texas State Association of Parliamentarians and the San Antonio Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians. She has served on the Board of Directors Public Relations Committee of the American Institute of Parliamentarians. She is a district examiner for the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, appointed to this position by Texas Govs. Bush and Perry. She serves on the Texas Department of Health Medical Education Subcommittee and has served on the Texas Department of Health Tobacco Advisory Committee. She was consultant to the National Institute of Health Center for Disease Control, Federal Drug Administration Forum: Development of Public Health Plan for Antibiotic Resistance. Mabry is also a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. She previously served on the editorial board of the Journal of Family Practice.

In 2000, Mabry was the TAFP Physician of the Year, and in both 2000 and 2001, was TAFP Foundation Philanthropist of the Year. She was a finalist for the AAFP Family Physician of the Year in 2001.
