It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Dr. David Demuth, 2008 Family Physician of the Year. Dr. Demuth passed away suddenly Oct. 9, 2007, just days after receiving the award. He will be fondly remembered for his contributions to the specialty of family medicine, and for the special place he held in the hearts of patients and the community of York, Neb.
CHICAGO – The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) today named David F. Demuth, M.D., FAAFP, the 2008 Family Physician of the Year at the opening ceremony of its Annual Scientific Assembly. The Family Physician of the Year award honors an outstanding American family physician who provides patients with compassionate and comprehensive care, and serves as a role model professionally and personally to his or her community, other health professionals, and residents and medical students.
Demuth established his commitment to family medicine almost 30 years ago. In 1980, he dedicated his life’s work to providing quality health care to members of the small community of York, Neb. Demuth’s compassionate care and community involvement prompted many letters of appreciation recognizing his kindness and generosity. Nominations were submitted by patients and non-patients alike, who are proud to say the 2008 Family Physician of the Year practices in their hometown.
Demuth also serves as a preceptor, teaching future physicians about the joys and challenges of family medicine. “We become friends and family with our patients of all ages — from newborns to teenagers to senior citizens,” Demuth said. “Being involved in all those aspects of life is the most rewarding; it’s the most fun.”
In addition to Demuth’s clinical and managerial expertise, Demuth’s community involvement extends from the neighborhoods of York throughout the state of Nebraska. He has always had a strong interest in local sports and acts as a liaison for the York High School Athletic Department and local physicians, coordinating medical supervision at high school games and also serves as team physician for many of the York-area schools.
Demuth further demonstrates his commitment to the community by serving as a volunteer member of the York County Drug Task Awareness Group and the Habitat for Humanity organization. He also raises registered Highland Cattle and serves on the American Highland Cattle Association Board of Directors.
Demuth has received many awards and accolades, including Nebraska Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year, was chief resident of the McLennan County Family Practice Research Foundation, and Outstanding Teacher of Family Medicine during his U.S. Navy service at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Dr. Demuth completed his family medicine residency at McLennan County Family Practice Research Foundation in Waco, Texas, and earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha, Neb. He received his undergraduate degree from Kearney State College in Kearney, Neb.

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 110,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.
Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 240 million office visits each year — nearly 87 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
