Uniformed Services University Student Elected to AAFP Board of Directors

BOSTON — Second Lieutenant Brooke Sciuto, a student at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and native of Mountain Top, Pa., has been elected to the board of the directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents more than 94,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. Sciuto was elected to a one-year term by the National Congress of Student Members and was confirmed by the governing body of the AAFP, the Congress of Delegates.

As the student member of the board of directors, Sciuto is responsible for representing the interests and opinions of the National Congress of Student Members to the AAFP Board of Directors and Congress of Delegates. In addition, she will advocate on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.

A member of the AAFP since 2006, Sciuto currently serves on the AAFP Commission on Continuing Professional Development and as AAFP’s alternate delegate representative to the AMA Medical Student Section. She has been the student member of the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors since January and represented the Uniformed Services AFP at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Students in 2008 and 2009. As president of the Uniformed Services University Family Medicine Interest Group, Sciuto led the organization to a 2008 Program of Excellence Award. In addition, she served as an FMIG regional coordinator in 2008.

Sciuto graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2003. During her assignment as an acquisitions officer at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., she was awarded the U.S. Air Force Achievement Medal and the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service.

As a medical student, Sciuto received first-place recognition for her research poster on preventing second heart attacks in patients who have had a myocardial infarction.

Sciuto has served as a medical volunteer in the local community’s Marine Corps Marathon and the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. She also volunteers with the Capital Area Food Bank, the GOSPEL Health Clinic Symposium and the Mobile Med clinic for underserved patients.
