Inactive Member
The following are the criteria for all inactive members of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Eligibility
- Members who are incapacitated by reason of illness, accident or infirmity.
- Members who are completely retired from the practice of medicine with less than twenty years continued membership.
- Active, resident and (FP) supporting members who interrupt their practice or residency training due to extenuating circumstances. (See Requirements)
Privileges
- May have floor at Assembly but may not vote or hold office.
Application Requirements
- Justification for extenuating circumstances are subject to interpretation and approval by AAFP Board of Directors.
- No member shall be considered for membership unless he or she has first been placed in this status by his or her respective constituent chapter.
- No person may hold inactive membership who does not hold a current medical license because such license has been revoked as a result of a disciplinary action.
- Election to inactive membership shall be for a maximum of one year, unless the member is totally retired, provided, however, that an inactive member may be re-elected to this classification annually by the Board of Directors.
Continuing Study Requirements
- None
Term of Membership
- One year unless the member is completely retired.
National AAFP Dues
- $50 annual dues (Jan.1 to Dec. 31)
General Membership Information
- Applications are approved at the constituent chapter level, subject to AAFP Bylaws. Applications for student and resident membership are approved at the national level, subject to AAFP bylaws.
- National headquarters completes enrollment. Transfers from one classification to another must be approved by the constituent chapter. For more information on transferring into this category, please contact your constituent state chapter.
- If all membership requirements are met, membership is continued on an annual basis, unless notification is received from the member.
Constituent and Local Chapter Dues
Membership is unified; members are required to belong to AAFP (national) and their constituent (state) chapters. They are also required to belong to their component (local) chapters where they exist. All chapter dues are set locally. Total annual dues information may be obtained from AAFP headquarters.
