To provide quality health care for all, we must first develop a well-trained primary care workforce to serve as the foundation for America’s health care system. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) included a number of provisions to increase and support the primary care workforce. It amends and expands many of the existing health workforce programs authorized under Title VII of the Public Health Service Act in part to encourage the training of more primary care physicians. The ACA also authorizes support for an innovative Primary Care Extension Program to be administered by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. In addition, the new law establishes a national commission to study projected health workforce needs and make appropriate recommendations.
