Student Debt

Student debt was found to be a significant barrier to the production of primary care physicians by a report published in March 2009, by the Robert Graham Center. The AAFP calls for expanded funding for federal loan and scholarship programs targeted to support family medicine and primary care, allowing for deferment of interest and principal payments on medical student loans until after completion of postgraduate training and tax-deductibility of interest on principal payment for such loans.
