Workforce Facts
The AAFP has put together data sheets that profile the following for most U.S. allopathic medical schools:
- Social mission ranking;
- Family medicine percentage, and;
- Family medicine ranking.
Although 2010 saw the largest number of medical students choosing family medicine as a specialty, the overall percentage of students choosing careers in the primary care specialties remains alarmingly low. Countries with primary care physicians as the foundation of the health care system have better health outcomes for the population at a lower cost. The U.S. needs — and its population deserves — a primary care physician-based health care delivery system.
