Competitive Activities of Officers, Directors and Committee Members

Concerned about the problem of competitive activities of officers, directors and committee members by reason of their service on editorial boards of journals competing with the Academy's publication, serving as consultants to firms producing audio-visual courses, etc., the Academy adopted the following policy:
  1. With any nomination for commission or committee appointment by the American Academy of Family Physicians, there shall be submitted by the nominating chapter a listing of any commercial, literary or academic appointment of the proposed candidate which might contribute to a present or potential future conflict of interest with the suggested appointment of other possible future activity of the candidate on behalf of the Academy.
  2. Any member of a commission or committee of the Academy who is engaged in any commercial activity which is beneficial financially to himself/herself, or through his/her efforts or advice to a commercial venture which is engaged in an activity which might be in competition with an Academy function or might come under the review of the commission or committee to which he/she is assigned, may be asked to either divest himself/herself of his/her relationship with that commercial venture or relinquish his/her appointment to the specific Academy commission or committee involved in such conflict.
  3. The Academy is requesting annually the submission of names of nominees for commissions or committees of the Academy and will inform by letter each nominating chapter of this policy regarding conflict of interest.
  4. Questions as to the compliance with the policy will be decided by the Board of Directors. If there is possible benefit to the Academy by an individual's participation in some activity outside the Academy structure, specific permission for that exception can be granted.
