Council of Medical Specialty Societies
The Board of Directors believes that AAFP representation on strategic review and coordinating bodies must be preserved in order for the Academy to remain an influential, viable and vital spokesman for the nation's family physicians. One such body is the Council of Medical Specialty Societies.
The CMSS today is playing an increasingly important role in American medicine. Its representation and participation in the Council for Medical Affairs (CFMA), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), among others, provides the council and, more importantly, its member organizations, an avenue and voice in determining significant and key policies that affect the delivery of health care in America.
In addition, the council represents a forum where specialty societies can meet together to discuss common problems on health care delivery. The importance of this forum is evidenced by the primary goals of the council which are to:
