CME Mission Statement
CME Purpose: The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) provides CME designed to help family physicians and other health professionals improve the care and service they offer their patients while increasing the vitality and efficiency of the settings in which they practice.
Target Audience: Family physicians and other health professionals will be targeted for these activities.
Type of Activities Provided: The AAFP will present scientifically valid and commercially unbiased content based on principles of effective adult learning in the following formats: group activities, self-study/enduring materials, journals, manuscript review for journals, point of care learning, performance improvement in practice, and other appropriate formats. This will be accomplished using a variety of media, and in practice-based settings where possible. AAFP CME activities will be designed to emphasize desirable physician attributes as identified by the Institute of Medicine, the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The AAFP will evaluate the effectiveness of all individual activities and of its overall CME program.
Content Areas: The goal of AAFP CME is to integrate content that includes current research and clinical practice guidelines presented with quantifiable levels of evidence, relevant to family physicians.
Expected results: The expected result of the AAFP CME is to improve physician competence, performance and patient outcomes through integration of evidence-based CME content and quality improvement in practice. AAFP CME emphasizes assessment of results through CME activities like performance improvement in practice and point of care learning, which incorporate documented application of new knowledge into practice.
