Excessive Fees
The AAFP is opposed to excessive fees charged by any physician, and in particular the overpricing of many procedural services. Each physician should make his/her own charges and be compensated for services rendered. However, each physician should be able to explain the basis for his/her fees.
The family physician, as the patient's advocate in health care quality and cost-effectiveness, should help the patient by selecting qualified consultants who charge reasonable fees and by advising the consultants of the need for special economic considerations for a financially disadvantaged patient.
