AAFP Mission Statement
Freedom of Choice
The AAFP has historically upheld freedom of choice for both physicians and patients as a fundamental principle.
The AAFP supports freedom of choice for both physicians and patients in selecting any ethical form of health care delivery, including fee-for-service groups and/or solo practices, HMOs, IPAs, PPOs and family physician plans. However, those who have options among various types of plans and make an informed decision to participate in a plan in which access to a specified physician or physicians is limited, have exercised freedom of choice.
Furthermore, the AAFP believes that no family physician should be restricted from, or limited in applying to participate in any health care plan or plans on an arbitrary basis. (1985) (2003)
