The AAFP condemns violence and illegal acts against physicians and other health professionals and urges prompt enforcement of laws prohibiting such activities.
The AAFP encourages all physicians to have a security manual/protocol in place and to go over security issues when training new staff. Physicians and other health professionals should be aware of their surroundings at all times and alert to potentially threatening situations or individuals.
The AAFP deplores any illegal activity that interferes with the welfare of patients and those who are providing patient care. To those ends, physicians and other health providers are encouraged to build working relationships with their local law enforcement agencies to ensure safety in their community. (1993) (2006)
