Public health consists of the range of activities and issues that affect the health of a community. Under this broad rubric fall many issues, including aging, asthma, immunizations, organ donation, communicable diseases, terrorism/disaster response and public hygiene. Public health research examines how communities can adapt and respond to issues detrimental to the health of its individuals. Family physicians are on the front lines of public health -- often serving in many communities as both family doctor and public health official -- making their advice crucial as states formulate public health policy.
