Environmental health examines how those actions and substances that are detrimental to the environment affect the health of individuals and populations. Family physicians frequently are the first to notice indicators of problem areas where the condition of the environment is damaging the population's health. As such, family physicians are situated uniquely as front-line defenders of public health and educators of public policymakers.
