Safety and Violence

Informing the community of healthy and safe behavior is a key to public health. For certain issues, though, a state may choose to mandate safe behavior. Often, this is seen through actions such as laws requiring seat belts, bicycle helmets and gun locks. Each contributes to keeping the individuals of a community healthy and alive. Family physicians, as the chosen medical advisors to patients, play a key role in advancing the safety message. As such, they also play a crucial role in advancing effective public policies promoting safety and discouraging violence.
