Do the RACs replace the other entities that review claims for accuracy of payment or investigate physicians' claims?
No. Medicare Contractors, Comprehensive Error Rate Testers and Program Safeguard Contractors will still perform claims review. However, the RAC will not be allowed to review a claim that has already been or is currently under review by another entity. A central database is intended to prevent multiple entities from reviewing the same claim. RACs are also prohibited from interfering with fraud reviews/investigations by Program Safeguard Contractors, the Office of the Inspector General or other law enforcement agencies.
