Currently, Medicare does not require the RACs to reimburse physicians for expenses related to records requests but allows that RACs may establish a system for paying for copies of records.
However, providers paid under the Prospective Payment System (e.g., hospitals) and Long Term Care facilities are paid 12 cents per page. The AAFP has joined the AMA and other specialties in requesting that physicians also be reimbursed for these expenses.
