AAFP Response to ACG Legal Opinion
In July 2005, the American College of Gastroenterologists (ACG) sent a letter and legal opinion to all hospital administrators warning them that they could be held liable for negligent credentialing if they allowed physicians who were not Board certified in gastroenterology to obtain privileges in endoscopy.
In response, the AAFP developed its own letter and legal opinion specific to colonoscopy. Both were sent to all hospital administrators on December 12, with copies to the Chairs of Family Medicine Departments.
