AAFP Involvement

The AAFP currently has a number of ongoing efforts to assess the environment and, hopefully, shape the larger debate around performance measurement. The AAFP has ongoing liaisons with the American Medical Association (AMA), America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), American College of Physicians (ACP), National Quality Forum (NQF), National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Studies (CMS) in relation to performance measures. The AAFP is actively involved in the AMA Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement, which develops performance measures from accepted evidence-based guidelines and generally involves all appropriate stakeholders. There has been AAFP member and staff representation on most of the condition specific work groups developing measures as well as the Consortium general meetings.

The AAFP has also devoted a considerable amount of time and effort in cooperation with America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the American College of Physicians (ACP) to promote the implementation of a standard set of measures for ambulatory care. The group now called the Ambulatory Quality Alliance (AQA), has published a recommended starter set of clinical performance measures for ambulatory care.
