LEAWOOD, Kan. – The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has named Michael Chamberlain, CAE, as the director of its recently created Member and Customer Service Division.
In his new position, Chamberlain is overseeing the launch of the AAFP’s new Contact Center. The Contact Center is designed to better serve AAFP members and other customers, providing them with exceptional service and a wealth of information concerning AAFP activities. The Contact Center is expected to handle 80 to 90 percent of the contacts made with the AAFP.
In addition to the Contact Center, Chamberlain also oversees the management of Member Records, and Continuing Medical Education Records and Reporting, two other areas handled by the newly formed Member and Customer Service Division.
Chamberlain has served the AAFP since 1993. Before accepting his new position, Chamberlain held the position of assistant director of the Administration Division since 1996, and, prior to that served as manager of Distribution Services. As assistant director of the Administration Division, Chamberlain led the team that developed, implemented and continually monitored the AAFP Pandemic Preparedness Plan.
“By forming the member and customer service division, the AAFP is making a commitment to provide its members with a level of service that exceeds all expectations,” said Donna Valponi, vice president of marketing, membership and meetings. “Mike Chamberlain is the perfect person to lead this effort. He has the experience and the dedication to realize the ambitions of this new division. He is a highly effective manager who brings out the best in his team.”
Outside of his duties with the AAFP, Chamberlain serves on the board of directors for the Kansas City Society of Association Executives.
Chamberlain received his master’s degree in business administration from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., where he also earned his bachelor’s of science in business administration.

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents more than 93,000 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.
Nearly one in four of all office visits are made to general and family physicians. That is 207 million office visits each year - 62 million more than to any other medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide the majority of care for America’s underserved and rural populations.
In the increasingly fragmented world of health care where many medical specialties limit their practice to a particular organ, disease, age or sex, family physicians are dedicated to treating the whole person across the full spectrum of ages. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
