Go Online for CME Videos, Family Resources on Kids

By News Staff

State-of-the-art care for kids -- that's the aim of the Academy's 2006 Annual Clinical Focus: Caring for Children and Adolescents.

ACF
The Academy is providing new CME online programs that are tied to its 2006 clinical focus. These programs cover ways to help family physicians provide care to children with anxiety disorders; disabilities and chronic illnesses; eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia; and violent behavior.

In addition, other online resources for FPs and their staff members and the families they serve offer CME and practical tips for kids and their families. Check out the following categories.

Immunizations. Two resources list the current immunization schedule for children and adolescents and specific recommendations for routine vaccination of adolescents and other populations at risk for meningococcal disease.

Obesity. The Academy has collaborated with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to create two DVDs on childhood obesity. "Max's Magical Delivery: Fit for Kids," is for youngsters ages 5 to 9 and their families. It provides children with fun encouragement to eat fruits and vegetables and to bust loose from the TV and computer to play for an hour a day. "Childhood Obesity: Combating the Epidemic," is for health care professionals; it covers screening and counseling for families, as well as treatment for obese, overweight and at-risk youngsters.

From the ACF resources page, FPs can link to information and tools from Americans in Motion, AAFP's fitness initiative, and Action for Healthy Kids, a nonprofit organization that seeks changes in schools to combat overweight, undernourishment and lack of exercise.

Smoking/substance abuse. Download materials from Tar Wars, AAFP's tobacco-free education program for fourth- and fifth-graders, and the Ask and Act Tobacco Cessation Campaign, an AAFP program that includes patient education materials, tools for health professionals and information on reimbursement for tobacco cessation counseling. Also, consider ordering the Alcohol Tool Kit, a resource that can minimize the time it takes to screen patients for alcohol problems. The kit can be ordered by calling (800) 944-0000 and requesting item #1921.

Patient education. Under this category online, FPs can access information from AAFP's award-winning familydoctor.org site and from "We Can!" (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition), a program developed by NIH.

General health
. This online category gives information on a federal forum on the health of children and families. In addition, users can link to Video CME programs from the 2005 ACF on Genomics that cover autism, newborn screening, bipolar disorder and family history.
