American Academy of Family Physicians

2010: The Year in Review

2010 was a year of great accomplishments for the Academy. Passage of the health care reform bill and some of its provisions represented a victory for family physicians and their patients, alike. The AAFP was involved every step of the way and continues to be involved as the focus turns toward defining and implementing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In this time of change for family physicians, the AAFP is experiencing an all-time high in membership numbers, and it promises to continue to advocate for a U.S. health care system that is strongly patient-centered and primary care-based.

Resident membership also increased. So did the percentage of residency graduates who converted to active membership -- the first such increase in 10 years. More
