CME, GME and Workforce: What Delegates Had to Say

Policy measures taken up Sept. 11 by the Reference Committee on Education here spanned a wide range of topics -- from CME and maintenance of certification, or MOC, to graduate medical education, or GME, workforce issues and defining the specialty's future. Members who attended the hearing took full advantage of their chance to have their say about each issue. But in the end, of course, it was the Congress of Delegates' say that mattered.

When Andrew Carroll, M.D., a full-time family physician in Chandler, Ariz., volunteered to practice tactical emergency medicine with a local SWAT team, he was required to carry a weapon. His wife wasn't thrilled when he brought his new gun home. "The first thing I did was sit down with my wife and kids and show them how to make the gun safe," Carroll said, referring to the use of a safety, removal of the magazine, etc. "That’s extremely important for every person in a house that has a gun to know."

Ronan Tynan had a lot to tell family physicians about overcoming adversity during the Opening Ceremony of the AAFP's Scientific Assembly on Sept. 14. He knows the topic well. The famed Irish tenor -- who also is an author, physician and world-record setting athlete -- was born with phocomelia, which caused deformities in his legs and feet. Tynan stood for the first time at age 3 with the help of prosthetics. He turned to prosthetics again at age 20 when an accident led to him losing both legs below the knee. Despite those obstacles, Tynan has packed a lot of life into his 51 years.

Patient safety was top of mind among AAFP members who debated policy measures that came before the Reference Committee on Advocacy here on Sept. 12. Those spirited discussions continued the next day, when the Congress of Delegates called for the Academy to oppose any expansion of naturopaths' scope of practice that is not strictly supported by their training, such as extending them liberal prescribing authority or permitting them to perform work/school physical exams or surgery. And in no case, said the delegates, should these individuals be granted "primary care physician" status.

AAFP President Glen Stream, M.D., of Spokane, Wash., stood before his family physician colleagues here on Wednesday and reminded them of the challenges the specialty of family medicine faces. "Every day, some procedural subspecialist tells a medical student, 'You're too smart to be a family physician,'" said Stream. "We're going to change that," he added.

Family physicians expect organizations that do business with the AAFP to turn to Academy members -- family physicians -- for the provision of health care to those organizations' employees. That was the gist of a substitute resolution adopted by the Congress of Delegates here on Sept. 13. Alternate delegate David Ashley, M.D., of Saunderstown, R.I., told the Reference Committee on Organization and Finance that the intention of the original resolution was take to advantage of the relationships that the Academy has forged with corporate America.
