Otis Bowen, M.D., FAAFP
-- Otis Bowen, M.D., FAAFP, of Bremen, Ind., died May 4 at age 95. A former Indiana governor and the first physician to serve as HHS secretary, Bowen had been a member of the Academy since 1949.
John Clowe, M.D., FAAFP
-- John Clowe, M.D., FAAFP, of Englewood, Fla., died May 25 at age 89. A former AMA president, Clowe had been a member of the Academy since 1954.
Barbara Starfield, M.D., M.P.H.
-- Barbara Starfield, M.D., M.P.H., of Baltimore, died June 10 at age 78. A pediatrician and renown health services researcher, Starfield was considered a strong advocate for primary care and a friend to family medicine.
Thomas Stern, M.D., FAAFP
-- Thomas Stern, M.D., FAAFP, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., died May 28 at age 90. He had been a member of the Academy since 1956. A former director of the AAFP Division of Education and founder of the Academy's Residency Assistance Program -- now known as Residency Program Solutions -- Stern held a number of other positions with the AAFP and the AAFP Foundation and received multiple honors from both organizations.
