Edward Ciriacy, M.D., FAAFP, 82, of Minneapolis died June 21. He had been a member of the Academy since 1955.
Ciriacy received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, in 1952 and completed his residency at Frankford Hospital, also in Philadelphia, in 1954. He moved to Minneapolis in 1971 and helped found the University of Minnesota's Department of Family Practice and Community Health. Ciriacy chaired the department until 1995 and continued as a professor there until his retirement in 1998.
Named a Fellow of the AAFP in 1974, Ciriacy served in various national Academy positions, including as chair of the AAFP Commission on Education from 1966-72 and as Committee on Resident and Student Affairs chair in 1974-75. He received the AAFP Thomas W. Johnson Award for Career Contributions to Family Medicine in 1973. He also was active in the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians, serving as its president in 1967-68.
A member of the AMA, Ciriacy served on its Residency Review Committee for Family Practice. He also was treasurer of the (then) American Board of Family Practice and was a past president of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
