Joseph Czarsty, M.D., FAAFP, 78, of Oakville, Conn., died July 21. He had been a member of the Academy since 1958.
Czarsty received his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. in 1954 and conducted his internship and residency at Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, Conn., from 1954 to 1956.
A naval veteran of World War II, Czarsty started his practice in Oakville, Conn., in 1956 and remained in that area for the rest of his life. He was the department surgeon for the police and fire departments in Watertown, Conn., for many years. Czarsty also taught family medicine at the University of Connecticut and was a past president of the Waterbury Medical Association, the New Haven County Medical Association and the Connecticut State Medical Society. He was among the first group of physicians to become board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine when it was formed in 1969.
Czarsty was elected to AAFP's Board of Directors in 1987 and served as its chair in 1990. He also served as treasurer of the AAFP for five years and president of the Connecticut Academy of Family Physicians. Czarsty was named a Fellow of the AAFP in 1972 and a lifetime member in 2000.
