Thomas Carroll, M.D., FAAFP

Thomas Carroll, M.D., FAAFP, 87, of Sibley, Iowa, died Feb. 15. He had been a member of the Academy since 1960.

Carroll received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, in 1948 and completed an internship at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, in 1948-49 before opening his practice in Sibley in 1949.

Carroll served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1941-43, when he was activated into a field artillery unit, later transferring to a medical unit. He was called up again during the Korean War, serving as a U.S. Air Force first lieutenant posted to a medical unit in Japan from 1950-51. He then returned to Sibley, where he practiced family medicine in a solo practice until his retirement in 1984.

Named a Fellow of the AAFP in 1973 and a Life member in 1987, Carroll served on the Academy's Task Force on Government and Member Participation from 1998-99. In 2001, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Iowa AFP.

Carroll earned other accolades, as well, being awarded the Tradition of Caring Jefferson Award for Public Service by regional TV station KELOLAND and Toshiba America Business Solutions in 2004. He also was active in community affairs, serving, for example, on the Osceola Community Hospital Foundation Board and as co-chair of a committee formed to raise funds for a memorial for Osceola County veterans.
