John Clowe, M.D., FAAFP

John Clowe, M.D., FAAFP, of Englewood, Fla., died May 25 at age 89. A former AMA president, Clowe had been a member of the Academy since 1954.

Clowe received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y., and completed his residency at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served from 1946-49 and achieved the rank of captain.

He returned to Schenectady, where, during his nearly four decades of practice, Clowe also served as chief school physician for the Schenectady City School District and health officer for the nearby Town of Niskayuna.

Clowe served as vice speaker of the Medical Society of the State of New York in 1980-81 and as speaker from 1981-85. After serving as an alternate delegate and delegate from the medical society to the AMA House of Delegates, he became vice speaker (1984-87) and speaker (1987-91) of the AMA house. Clowe then was elected AMA president, serving in that role in 1992-93.

Clowe earned his board certification from the American Board of Family Practice (now the American Board of Family Medicine, or ABFM) in 1977 and remained an ABFM diplomate until 1990.
