Each year at the AAFP Assembly, the Academy recognizes members and others for their outstanding contributions to family medicine. The following persons were honored during this year’s Assembly.
- 2008 Family Physician of the Year -- David Demuth, M.D., of York, Neb.
- Honorary Membership -- Reg Perkin, M.D., of Mississauga, Ontario, former executive director of the College of Family Physicians of Canada
- John G. Walsh Award for Lifetime Contributions to Family Medicine -- Otis Bowen, M.D., of Bremen, Ind., former governor of Indiana
- Thomas W. Johnson Award for Career Contributions to Family Medicine Education -- Edward Bope, M.D., of Columbus, Ohio
- Exemplary Teaching Awards -- Elizabeth Baxley, M.D., of Columbia, S.C. (full-time faculty); Richard Levandowski, M.D., of Lawrenceville, N.J. (volunteer faculty)
- AAFP Public Health Award -- L. Allen Dobson, M.D., of Concord, N.C.
- Robert Graham Physician Executive Award -- Mary Jo Welker, M.D., of Columbus, Ohio
- Humanitarian Award -- Susan Black, M.D., of Johannesburg, South Africa
- Outstanding Service Award -- Stephen Meyer of Skaneateles Falls, N.Y.
- Award of Merit -- Allan Pelch, M.D., of Herlufmagle, Denmark
