Carlos Jaen, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, has been named to the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality's National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality. The council advises HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt and AHRQ Director Carolyn Clancy, M.D.
Jaen, an AAFP member since 1992, was appointed to the AHRQ council Dec. 9 along with four other new members. The council consists of 21 members from the private sector and seven ex-officio members from other federal agencies. The private-sector members each serve three-year terms and represent health care plans, health care professionals, purchasers, consumers and researchers.
As chair of the Association of Departments of Family Medicine's Research Committee, Jaen serves as an ex-officio member of the ADFM Board of Directors. He also sits on the Academic Affairs and Public Health and Clinical Affairs committees of the Texas AFP.
Other family physicians on the AHRQ advisory council are Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., of Bayou La Batre, Ala., and Doug Campos-Outcalt, M.D., M.P.A., of Phoenix.
