The PCSS mentoring program is a collaborative effort among the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and four medical specialty societies: American Society of Addiction Medicine, American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine and American Psychiatric Association. The mentors -- practicing physicians and educators -- are members of these organizations.

The PCSS' strategic planning is conducted by representatives of 11 other organizations including the AAFP, AMA, American Pain Society and Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.
