Need a mentor for adopting an electronic health record system? A new feature on AAFP’s Center for Health Information Technology Web site can help.
FPs who are shopping for an EHR system can now locate FPs who have similar practices, have been through implementation and are willing to answer EHR-related questions.
Go to http://www.centerforhit.org/mem/cgi-bin/findfriend.pl, then agree to the usage terms and provide your AAFP ID number and password to explore this option. You will come to a screen with this headline: “Find a Doctor Like Me in a Practice Like Mine.”

Indicate your practice size, your state (or perhaps a neighboring state) and EHR products you are considering. A search will turn up names and e-mail contact information for physicians who fit the criteria you entered.
The inquiring FP also has the opportunity to read EHR product reviews posted on the CHiT Web site.
Steven Waldren, M.D., assistant director of CHiT, said the real benefit of this new feature is that a family physician can find a colleague within reasonable traveling distance already using an EHR product the inquiring physician may be interested in purchasing.
“We’re connecting EHR users with those looking to purchase an EHR,” said Waldren.
