You may not know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, but you probably should be aware that according to the American Cancer Society, more than 212,000 women and 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005.

The Academy's award-winning patient education Web site, familydoctor.org, has created a feature page to help visitors learn more about breast cancer and early detection.
Visitors to the page can link to a guide on self-examination and detection, breast cancer information from the American Cancer Society, a question-and-answer discussion about genetics and the risk of inheriting breast cancer, and other Web sites focusing on breast cancer.
When you send your patients to the site, be sure to remind them: Early detection is the key to breast cancer treatment. The breast cancer survival rate is much greater if the disease is detected before it has the chance to spread.
