Food labels may be Americans' handiest source of information on the health quotient of their foods. If you'd like to help improve the labels, the FDA has a job for you: Comment on two notices of proposed rule making published in the Federal Register April 4.
The first notice -- Food Labeling: Prominence of Calories covers how calories are listed on packaged foods and how consumers use this information in making food choices.
The second notice -- Food Labeling: Serving Sizes -- addresses serving size information and possible ways to revise the label to make it easier for consumers to choose healthier foods.
You can e-mail your comments by June 20 to fdadockets@oc.fda.gov or in writing to the Division of Dockets Management, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, MD 20852. For comments on the prominence of calories, use docket number 2004N-0463. For comments on serving sizes, use docket number 2004N-0456.
