Academy Bestows Honors, Awards

Each year at the AAFP Assembly, the AAFP recognizes members and others for their outstanding contributions to family medicine. The following persons were honored during this year's Assembly:

  • 2006 Family Physician of the Year -- Sister Adele O'Sullivan, C.S. J., M.D., of Phoenix
  • Honorary Membership -- Roger Sherwood, C.A.E., of Kansas City, Mo., executive director of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine
  • Award of Merit -- Cheryl Myers, C.A.E., of Louisville, Ky., former EVP of the Kentucky AFP
  • John G. Walsh Award for Lifetime Contributions to Family Medicine -- Barbara Starfield, M.D., M.P.H., of Baltimore
  • Thomas W. Johnson Award for Career Contributions to Family Medicine Education -- John Pfenninger, M.D., of Midland, Mich.
  • Exemplary Teaching Awards -- Kathleen Macken, M.D., of St. Paul, Minn. (full-time faculty); Michael Machen, M.D., of Quinter, Kan. (part-time faculty); and Larry Anderson, M.D., of Wellington, Kan., and David McRay, M.D., of Jellico, Tenn. (volunteer faculty)
  • AAFP Public Health Award -- Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., of Austin, Texas
  • Robert Graham Physician Executive Award -- Larry Green, M.D., of Aurora, Colo.
  • Humanitarian Award -- Calvin Wilson, M.D., of Lakewood, Colo.
