Tar Wars Poster Contest Winners Honored

Congratulations to this year's Tar Wars national poster contest winner -- Miranda Lee Raynes of New Martinsville, W.Va. Miranda Lee, a fifth-grader, and other state and national poster contest winners were recognized July 19 at an awards ceremony in Alexandria, Va.

The winning entry in the 2005 Tar Wars National Poster Contest was submitted by fifth-grader Miranda Lee Raynes of New Martinsville, W. Va.
Tar Wars is the AAFP's tobacco-free education program for fourth- and fifth-graders. Established in 1988 and overseen by the Academy since 1997, the program has been implemented by family physician-educators and others in all 50 states and has reached more than seven million children.

Miranda Lee's poster was selected from among 41 entries, all of them winners of state Tar Wars poster contests. As the national contest winner, she receives a family trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Three runners-up in the national poster contest were named, and seven youngsters received honorable mentions. Each of the children and all of the state contest winners received a prize packet and savings bond.

Second place: Allison Lynch of Shakopee, Minn.
Third place: Jessica Shenoi of Tulsa, Okla.
Fourth place: Brandon Arakaki of Waikoloa, Hawaii

Honorable Mentions
Fifth place: Holly Pittard of Pompano Beach, Fla.
Sixth place: Nicole Patton of Barrington, R.I.
Seventh place: Patrick Blackert of Mineral, Ill.
Eighth place: Jessica Madden of Georgia, Vt.
Ninth place: Hannah Wheeler of Des Moines, Iowa
Tenth place (tie): Annie Kruger of Washington, D.C., and Christina McCann of Eleva, Wis.
