Check out the July issue of Modern Physician (you may need to register for free online access) to see its list of the 50 most powerful physician executives. A name familiar to AAFP members and to folks in health information technology circles will no doubt stand out: David C. Kibbe, M.D., director of AAFP's Center for Health Information Technology, ranked 40th on the list.
More than 1,100 nominations were received for this year's ballot, with more than 3,100 votes cast to determine the top 50 names.
"Without much national notice or fanfare, physicians have assumed a number of key leadership positions within and outside of the health care industry," said David Burda, editor of Modern Physician, in a press release. "Our readers have noticed, and this list represents just 50 of the thousands of physician executives working to make the health care system better for patients and their families."
Other names familiar to AAFP members also made the list. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) ranked third. AMA President and family physician J. Edward Hill, M.D., of Tupelo, Miss., ranked 22nd, and Sen. Thomas Coburn (R-Okla.), a family physician from Muskogee, ranked 35th.
