Wonca, the World Organization of Family Doctors, last fall adopted the Wonca Statement on Humanity, and the AAFP Board of Directors decided in early May to ask Wonca to publish and promote the statement as soon as possible.
The statement criticizes infringement on human rights for political reasons. "Human torture and genocide is practiced in many countries by state structures, political or terrorist groups," the statement says, expressing concern about "the increasing trend of destructive and inhumane behavior." The statement adds, "Physicians are sometimes involved in such activities."
Wonca "detests these inhuman ideologies and activities and calls on all nations to respect the human rights which apply to all men and women and children of the world," the statement asserts.
