FP Julie Wood, M.D., of Lee's Summit, Mo., a long-time tobacco cessation advocate, and Richard Botelho, M.D., a pioneer in behavioral modification techniques, will facilitate the interactive webcast, which will include live polling and a question-and-answer session.
The webcast aims to teach physicians how to
- engage smokers who are in the precontemplation stage of behavior change;
- maximize payment for tobacco cessation treatment and counseling;
- make system changes that increase intervention and tobacco cessation rates;
- use the most recent therapeutic evidence to help patients break their dependence on nicotine;
- discuss the pros and cons of mixing and matching cessation treatments; and
- help actively smoking patients or those who are attempting to quit in as few as 30 seconds.
After registrants have signed up for the course, they will receive an e-mail detailing how to access the webcast, which is part of the Academy's Ask and Act campaign and is sponsored in part by a grant from the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center. Ask and Act offers a number of free resources online.
AAFP members who participate in the webcast will be eligible to receive up to two Prescribed CME credits, including double credit for evidence-based CME clinical content.
