AAFP members now can learn how to enhance their ability to care for a culturally and linguistically diverse patient base through free, Web-based CME. That's what the new online Quality Care for Diverse Populations, or QCDP, curriculum offers.

EHRs
QCDP was released by the Academy as a "notebook toolkit" with accompanying videocassette materials and as a CD-ROM in 2002. In 2005, the curriculum was named a recommended resource by the American Medical Association's Commission to End Health Care Disparities.

The online version of QCDP contains all the materials from the previous editions, including five video vignettes. The course teaches users how to

  • work collaboratively with medical interpreters;
  • recognize why and when obesity-related cultural factors may be a communication barrier;
  • identify health-based information for homosexual populations, including health risks and disparities, and strategies for improvement;
  • identify major immigration-related stressors and problems encountered during the medical exam; and
  • understand the importance of honoring traditional Native American communication patterns.
Although the online version is available for free, the previous format versions still are available for purchase. Go online to buy the notebook/videocassette group training program or CD-ROM.
