Family physicians who want to share their expertise by presenting CME sessions at the AAFP Scientific Assembly, Oct. 3-7, 2007, in Chicago, should submit proposals by Nov. 1. A time-limited page on the AAFP Web site, "Submit Your 2007 CME Proposals" gives suggestions and has links to related materials, including the form for proposals.

The Subcommittee on Assembly Scientific Program, a subcommittee of the Commission on Continuing Professional Development, has suggested a number of key topics for those hoping to present; however, "submissions should not be limited to these topics," say the online materials. The suggested topics include

  • adolescent behavioral problems;
  • adults who had deadly diseases as children but survived;
  • anorexia;
  • Asperger's syndrome;
  • bullying;
  • endocrine (topics other than metabolic syndrome, diabetes and thyroid problems);
  • hepatitis C;
  • HIV/AIDS;
  • leukemia;
  • patient education;
  • polycystic ovary syndrome;
  • sleep disorders; and
  • helping children with special needs make the transition from pediatricians to family physicians.
All proposals must be submitted electronically. As noted online, factors involved in approving a proposal include clearly stated learning objectives and program goals; coverage of topics that are new, "hot" or emerging; and inclusion of evidence-based content.

Presentation formats are computer workshops, didactic presentations of 45 or 75 minutes with 15-minute question-and-answer sessions, and clinical procedures workshops. Beginning with the Scientific Assembly program for 2007, the Subcommittee on Assembly Scientific Program will no longer offer two- or three-hour program formats, except for offerings such as clinical procedures workshops. "This decision was based on adult learning data and studies," say the online proposal submission materials.
