Fall has arrived, but there are still plenty of opportunities to complete the American Board of Family Medicine's Maintenance of Certification Program for Family Physicians, or MC-FP, requirements before the end of the year.

The AAFP will offer a one-day self-assessment module, or SAM, prep session on congestive heart failure from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the AAFP Scientific Assembly. The session will be led by Theodore Ganiats, M.D., professor and interim chair of the department of family and preventive medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and Lee Green, M.D., M.P.H., a professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Michigan's Health System, Ann Arbor. The fee for the session is $95.

Two days later in the same city, the Academy will hold a one-day SAM prep session on depression from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Discussions at the Sept. 30 session will be led by Gary Levine, M.D., associate professor in the department of family medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C., and John Purvis, M.D., associate director of clinical services and curriculum for the family practice residency program at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Florida. Registration is $95.

Levine and Purvis also will lead a depression SAM prep session from 1:15 to 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 14 in Salt Lake City. This course stands alone, but it is scheduled during a break in the five-day Geriatric Medicine Course. Register before Sept. 13 for a discounted rate of $150; after that, registration is $185. Separate registration is required for the Geriatric Medicine Course.

If you can't make the above two depression prep courses, there is one more chance to catch the session by Levine and Purvis. A third review session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 9 in Dallas. Early bird registration is $150 until Oct. 9; following that, the fee jumps to $185.

The following day, the AAFP will present its final 2006 MC-FP SAM prep session of the year when Ganiats and Green present an encore session on congestive heart failure. The session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 10 in Dallas. Registration by Oct. 9 is only $150; after that, registration will be $185.
