Allergy Season Is Upon Us -- Here's Help for Your Patients

In case there was any question, those sounds you hear from your reception area are the sneezing and wheezing that signal spring's arrival. Whether deep in the heart of allergy season (which health experts say now comes earlier -- and lasts longer -- than it did decades ago) or at other times during the year, the AAFP offers many resources, such as DVDs and brochures, to help you provide relief to your suffering patients.

Here's a sampling:

  • "Allergic Rhinitis & Asthma: A Clinical Practice Update" -- This DVD is intended to help you identify early signs and symptoms of, as well as discuss the relationship between, allergic rhinitis and asthma; review techniques to manage symptoms in patients with allergic rhinitis; and describe therapies to manage asthma, with an emphasis on maintaining long-term symptom control and preventing exacerbations and the need for emergency treatment. FPs can earn as much as one Prescribed CME credit for completing this activity.
  • "Allergic or Nonallergic Rhinitis Video: Taking the Questions Out of Diagnosis and Treatment" -- This DVD program aims to help you distinguish allergies from other upper respiratory conditions, establish which substances are most likely to cause allergic reactions in patients, determine which over-the-counter and prescription medications provide the most effective relief for patients with allergies, and understand and recognize allergic disease severe enough to require referral to another specialist. FPs can earn as many as 3.25 Prescribed credits.
  • "Common Conditions: Asthma" and "Common Conditions: Hay Fever and Allergies" -- These preprinted brochures can help patients understand their conditions.
  • "Asthma & Allergy Resource Guide" -- Topics in this free guide include the role of triggers, treatment of asthma and allergies, routine asthma care, and supporting patient self-management.
