AIM Webcast on Heart-Healthy Foods Scheduled for Aug. 7
FPs Can Earn CME Credit, Learn Strategies to Help Patients
By Barbara Bein
AAFP members looking for ways to help patients improve their overall health are invited to register for a CME webcast designed to teach physicians how to encourage patients to add heart-healthy foods to their diets. The webcast is part of the Academy's Americans in Motion, or AIM, fitness initiative.
The webcast, "Foods that Foster Healthy Hearts," will air at noon CDT and again at 6 p.m. CDT on Aug. 7. The event will be led by Mark Stephens, M.D., of Bethesda, Md., a member of the AIM Advisory Panel, and Theodore Ganiats, M.D., of La Jolla, Calif., medical director of the AAFP Annual Clinical Focus.
"America's waistline is expanding from cradle to grave," Stephens told AAFP News Now when asked about the reason for the webcast. "The public health and economic implications are enormous. Providing resources for America's family physicians -- who care for the majority of the at-risk population -- is essential."
Webcast participants can earn two Prescribed CME credits and gain information about various nutrition-related topics, such as

Webcast participants can earn two Prescribed CME credits and gain information about various nutrition-related topics, such as
- how small changes in the diet can reduce the risk of heart disease;
- how to talk to patients about proper nutrition and other heart-healthy habits;
- how certain foods can help patients reduce cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and ameliorate symptoms of heart disease; and
- how nuts can play a role in a heart-healthy diet.
Visit AIM's "Foods That Foster Healthy Hearts" Web page to learn more about the webcast and to register for the live event. An archived version of the webcast should be available via a link on that Web page after Aug. 16.
