LearningLink Debuts With Series on Managing Pain

By Barbara Bein

The AAFP has launched a new online classroom, dubbed LearningLink, that provides Academy members with CME in multiple formats.
On Your Behalf
The free program focuses on specific diseases or medical conditions, with pain management as the first topic. Registered participants learn about the topic -- and earn CME credit -- by completing five, hour-long activities to be released periodically from now through February. The series includes a webcast, along with audio and video podcasts.

"Managing chronic pain is a challenge for family physicians and merits targeted education," said Leigh McKinney, director of AAFP's Online and Custom Publishing Division, which developed the programming. "We liked the multimedia and longitudinal aspects of LearningLink."

Like a traditional classroom, LearningLink incorporates some give-and-take features. Participants take tests before and after completing a program. The tests help identify any gaps in their knowledge so later programs can be tailored to fill those gaps.

As a bonus, LearningLink will provide point-of-care resources, or tools, which participants can download and incorporate into their practices immediately.

The first activity, which launched on July 23, is a webcast, "Assessment and Management of Chronic Pain." The webcast is presented by Neil Skolnik, M.D., of Jenkintown, Pa. He is professor of family and community medicine at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He's also associate director of the family practice residency program at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pa.

Skolnik will talk about how family physicians can diagnose and assess chronic pain and treat it with opioid drugs, nonopioid drugs and adjuvant medications, as well as with nonpharmacologic methods.

The next programs in the pain management series and their release times are "Abuse and Diversion" in August, "Challenging Issues in Pain Management" in October, "Disparities in Care: Special Populations in Pain Management" in November and "Chronic Pain Management: Case-based Application" in February 2009.

The AAFP and MedEd Architects LLC, a health care communication and production company, collaborated to produce the program. It is funded by a grant from Ortho-McNeil Janssen Scientific Affairs.
