New survey results released by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) show that enrollment at U.S. medical schools and schools of osteopathic medicine continues to increase at a steady pace. However, the same survey highlights increasing concern from the nation's medical school deans that insufficient numbers of residency training positions will be available to meet matriculating students' graduate medical education needs.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires all medical specialties to review and revise their residency program requirements on a regular basis. This year, however, the ACGME is implementing a new system dubbed the Next Accreditation System, which has drawn fire from the AAFP regarding curriculum changes in women's reproductive health it would impose on family medicine. According to AAFP Medical Education Division Director Stanley Kozakowski, M.D., "There was a goal to simplify many of the current prescriptive requirements across the breadth of family medicine to allow for greater innovation on the part of residency programs."

Practicing family physicians, family medicine educators and family medicine residents who crave an opportunity to participate in evidence-based health care or public health studies that improve the nation's health may have found a fellowship opportunity that's tailor-made for them. The James C. Puffer, M.D./American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Fellowship at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched in November 2010 when the ABFM seized an opportunity to partner with the IOM by establishing an endowed fellowship through a gift to the National Academy of Sciences.

AAFP Updates CME Faculty Recruitment, Selection Process

The AAFP Division of Continuing Medical Education (DCME) aims to provide a professionally rewarding and personally fulfilling experience for everyone involved in the creation of CME, according to DCME Medical Director Ann Karty, M.D. With that in mind, the Academy is moving to optimize its CME faculty selection process, in part by offering easier access to online tools for faculty. During the past few months, Karty explained, the Academy has made renovations to the CME faculty section of the AAFP website; updated resources; and disseminated e-mail blasts, mailers and satisfaction surveys -- all designed to enrich the overall faculty portfolio.

Medical Schools Need to Change Approach in Training Primary Care Physicians, Says Panel

Most medical school faculties are not well versed in the fundamental changes taking place in the nation's health care system, which makes it difficult for them to adequately prepare medical school students and residents for practicing in the changing health care environment. That was a central theme that emerged from a primary care policy forum held by the American Board of Family Medicine in Washington recently. "If we are going to talk about innovation and change, we often have to change the faculty, because their national inclination is to teach what they have been doing their whole careers and what they were taught," said George Thibault, M.D., president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, who spoke as part of a three-member panel. "That is different from what we want to transform the health care system into," he added.

Student Interest Video Stresses Critical Thinking About Career Choice

The AAFP is betting that a short video -- just one minute and thirteen seconds long -- will convince medical students to pause and reflect on the biggest decision they'll face in medical school: their choice of specialty. Stan Kozakowski, M.D., director of the AAFP Division of Medical Education, urged his colleagues who work with medical students and pre-med students to use the new video as a tool when talking with them about specialty choice. "We want family physicians to make the video work for family medicine. I encourage members to e-mail the video link to students and post it to social media websites," he said.
